Greg Bowden, Tackeracka, Bauhinia and Jon Gaffney with top priced $15,000 Hummer L228 bull.

A large crowd of cattle producers from across Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia packed the stands at Graneta Limousin/Angus bull sale on Friday at Bell.

There was a strong presence of repeat commercial bull buyers at the sale, hosted by stud principles Jon and Leny Gaffney, Glendale, Bell with Lot 12 Hummer L228 bull topping the sale at $15,000.

After a bout of spirited bidding, Greg Bowden, Tackeracka, Bauhinia via Moura emerged the top priced bull buyer for the Hummer L228 sire. The polled Apricot bull weighed 755 kilograms with 11 millimetres of fat on the rump and eight millimetres of fat on the rib and an eye muscle area of 124 centimetres squared plus a 39 centimetre scrotal measurement.

“I focus on buying bulls with low birth weights and good 600 day Estimated Breeding Value figures and the Hummer bull had all these quality traits and more,” Mr Bowden said.

The bull was in the top 10 per cent for 400 and 600 days Estimated Breeding Values and top 20pc for 200 days.

“This sire has top prospects for producing cattle that will suit a variety of markets,” Mr Gaffney said.

The bull will now go to work in Mr Bowden Droughtmaster cow herd, which has a focus on producing bullocks for direct consignment to the processors but prolonged dry weather conditions have resulted in Mr Bowden turning-off feeder weight steers and also selling some young, weaner cattle on AuctionsPlus.

The sale achieved an 88 per cent clearance rate with 42 bulls offered and 37 bulls sold. In total the sale grossed $244,500 with an average price of $6680 recorded during the sale.

Volume buyers at the sale were Clews Cattle Co, Cronulla, Alpha and Crescent Nine Pastoral, Springsure. Agents: GDL.
